Fierce Gales Cause Tens of Thousands Without Power in New Zealand

Storm damage in New Zealand
Citizens urged to stay indoors as strong winds lash the region.

Powerful gales attaining velocities of up to 155km/h (96mph) have resulted in around 90,000 homes lacking electricity and forced agencies to halt more than 100 air travel services, based on regional news sources.

The winds are affecting the complete southern region and southern parts of the North Island, as stated by the country's meteorological service.

Officials in New Zealand have issued rare red wind warnings - the most severe warning - in central regions encompassing Wellington and Canterbury.

Locals have been encouraged to remain inside, refrain from journeys, and prepare for further utility disruptions.

Widespread Damage and Crisis Measures

This outage seems to be impacting households mainly in the South Island, although authorities state that energy was being slowly brought back.

Local media have stated that in certain areas structures have suffered roof damage, while utility poles and vegetation have been knocked down by the winds.

Across Wellington, a man was killed after being struck by a falling limb at a well-known hiking path on earlier this week.

Meanwhile in Wellington, a female was pushed toward approaching vehicles on a thoroughfare by a powerful blast, in a moment that was captured in a widely shared car camera footage.

Air travel entering and leaving the metropolis have been cancelled because of the weather, and some roads and libraries are not operating.

Meanwhile authorities in Canterbury have announced a emergency situation, to facilitate disaster response efforts.

Work Stoppages During Extreme Weather

The wild winds on Thursday coincide with tens of thousands of teachers, doctors and other public workers are engaged in what has been termed a "major walkout", requesting higher wages and enhanced employment terms.

However the intense climate has forced them to alter some of their plans, with some outdoor rallies relocated inside or cancelled.

Comparable winds are affecting Australia, causing a period of extreme heat to the nation's interior regions.

Agencies have issued fire bans for apprehension regarding bushfires.
